'WARBURTONIANS' solo exhibition 2021
Warburtonians - Wood Sculpture Exhibition by Shlomit Moria 16th December 2021 to 4th January 2022

Shlomit shares her deep respect for community and connection in “Warburtonians”, a collection of ten sculptures in the human form, and the characteristics that make us who we are.  Carved with a chainsaw and hand tools from reclaimed local cypress, these three dimensional sculptures represent a gathering of local people central to Shlomit’s life during the multiple lockdowns experienced by her community during the pandemic. Each figure, in her first solo exhibition, is a study in perspective, leading Shlomit into detailed explorations of anatomy and physiology and the unique relationships between the elements of the body that imbibe each person with their character. Influenced by her per-pandemic tour in India, where Shlomit spent a month practicing the art of traditional Tibetan wood carving, these sculptures also reflect a process of quiet observation and a commitment to slowing down her practice and observing and refining each detail to its ultimate execution. To rush was to empty the process of its finest destination, and as we observe each of the ten sculptures we are taken deeply into the nuance of personality, and the minutia that makes us human. Shlomit’s work is an invitation for us consider the beauty of the whole as a sum of its parts, and to share in the sense of companionship present in each figure. This work was an antidote to the isolation and creative vacuum felt during the pandemic and reminds us of the humanity that has held us steady and ‘solid’ during such times. She is delighted to continue work on this project with the intention of developing a village of local people as part of her life’s work.
